This is a transition sound design breakdown. The trailer in the video above is one I made for MotionVFX (a client of mine), and it's driven almost entirely by transition sound effects. Let's go through how I built it.

First: cut to the beat

If you don't know how to find the beat, it's whatever point you'd bob your head on. Mute everything but the music and listen. You can also cut on the offbeat, halfway between beats, which is trickier on a fast song. Obvious to some, but I've noticed a lot of people struggle with this, so it needed saying.

Organize with audio roles

I split my audio into direct sound effects (anything you can see, you should be able to hear: the go-kart on the dunes), ambient sound effects (background traffic, factory noise, seagulls), and effects (whooshes, risers, hits). Set this up by right-clicking, Assign Audio Roles, Edit Roles, add a role, label it, then assign clips to it. Here's the test: mute the music and play the video. If the sound design almost carries it on its own, your layers are doing their job, and everything will mix that much better once the music returns.

Match the sound to the transition's movement

Look at each transition and imagine what sound it would make, even if that's creative and odd. A transition that moves upward wants a sound that rises or builds (I used a whooshing riser from Artlist that almost climbs as it plays). It tricks your mind into thinking the sound was recorded in-camera with the transition. A sputtery, stuttering film-frame transition wants choppy, grainy sounds. Your brain expects to hear something that matches what it sees; if it doesn't match, viewers subconsciously feel something's off.

Layer, always

I never add just one sound per transition. The skateboard transition has skateboard sounds plus a suck-back glitch playing off each other. One "sputtering" transition is a ratchet sound effect layered with whooshes. Another has a welder (yes, a welder: I literally search my library asking "could this possibly work based on the visuals?" and it's shocking how often the answer is yes). A sci-fi whoosh goes on a glitchy one. Walkie-talkie static helps sell grainy stutter frames. One whoosh and done is where most people go wrong; more layers at different octaves and pitches always sounds fuller.

You can also tweak the SHOT to fit the sound: one shot wasn't rotating at all, but it looked like a clock (a guy posed like clock hands), so I spun it with the transform tools and added a little clock noise.

Accent the music's changes

When the music itself changes, your transitions should ride it. At the point where the beat pauses and drops back in, I stacked two risers: a fairy-sparkle riser whoosh for the treble end and a reverse bass drop for the low end. Together they make one full riser, and the climax of both lands exactly on the switch. Get that timing wrong and it just doesn't work. A record scratch on another change signals a shift in both the shot and the music.

The cut-to-silence trick

If you have a loud set of transition sounds, try cutting ALL the sound when you land on the next shot. Movies do this constantly: a build-up, then nothing, maybe a little reverb tail extending into the new shot. The silence punctuates the change harder than any hit could. Mine also left room for the ambient layer (seagulls) to breathe.

Sell what's in the frame

There's a boombox in one shot, so I typed "radio" into Final Cut's built-in sound effects and layered one in; it even rises slightly, which matches the shot dollying forward. The next transition looked like changing channels, so it got a channel-change sound. Basketball shots need dribbles, timed properly. If radios are visible in the background of a shot, a faint radio sound makes your brain believe it's part of the scene.

Build the ending

The audience knows the end is coming, so lead them there: a longer riser that builds anticipation, then hit them with the boom and the title. I finished with a power-down sound effect, like a bass drop, placed right at the end of the riser, leading out into silence. Build, hit, quiet.

Levels and where I get sounds

Layering causes peaking (mine peaked in this project, I added way too much), so start your sound effects at -12 dB or lower and raise only the ones that should be prominent. Sources: YouTube free (search "cinematic transition sound effects"), Artlist, Audiio, and Soundsnap for specific, high-quality finds (pricier, worth it on bigger projects). The film sounds came from CinePacks, a great overlay pack. And the transition pack in this trailer is one of my favorites MotionVFX has ever made, and I'm not just saying that because I work with them.

Recap

Layer as much as possible. Use transition sounds to accentuate the music, pausing and restarting with the beat. Start at -10 to -12. Design the sound to match what the transition looks like. And two bonus tools: retime or pitch-shift effects with FCP's pitch effect, and shape them with the built-in reverbs (Cathedral, Large Room, Small Room) until they sit the way you want. Resolve and Premiere users, you have equivalents; go nuts.
