Final Cut Pro Playing Random Audio? Here's the Fix

Like we do on this channel, let's cut the fluff and jump into the good stuff. There are two instances where you might hear random audio with no visible audio track on your timeline, and here's the fix for both.

Instance 1: The hidden L-cut

You're hearing dialogue at a point in your timeline with no audio track underneath. The likely reason: select the clip just BEFORE that point and press Control S (or control-click, Expand Audio). You'll probably find that the clip's audio extends past where its video ends, an L-cut that got created somewhere along the way.

From there you have options: trim the audio tail back, extend the video to match it, or, if the L-cut actually sounds good, keep it. When you're done inspecting, hit Control S again to collapse everything so your timeline stays nice and neat.

Instance 2: The ghost clip

This one happened to my girlfriend recently and genuinely perplexed me. Expanding the audio of every surrounding clip did nothing, and the mystery audio was from a completely different part of her video. A phantom.

The solution lives in the timeline index, the list of every clip, title, and preset in timeline order (a great way to find anything, honestly). Switch the index to Audio so only audio items show. Note where the phantom audio starts playing, say around the 40 second mark, and look at the index at that point: there it is, an audio clip listed in the index but nowhere to be found on the visible timeline. A ghost in the upside down world.

Here's the trick: selecting a clip in the index also selects it wherever it actually lives. So click the ghost in the index, press delete, and it's banished. Timeline plays back clean.
