Most Final Cut Pro transition tutorials show you what transitions look like. This one shows you how to actually use them efficiently, plus a few tricks the interface doesn't advertise.
01The adjustment clip transition
Instead of applying a transition directly between two clips, place an adjustment clip over the cut point and add your effect to that. Why? Because you can move, duplicate, and delete it without touching your underlying clips. It also works on clips that don't have enough handles for a traditional transition.
02Copy a transition with Option+drag
If you've applied and customised a transition (changed its duration, tweaked its settings), you don't have to rebuild it for every cut. Hold Option and drag the transition from one cut point to another. FCP copies the transition with all your settings intact. This alone saves minutes on an edit with lots of cuts.
03Set your default transition with one shortcut
The shortcut Cmd+Opt+T applies your default transition to any selected clip or cut. Right-click any transition in the Transitions browser and choose Make Default to change which transition this applies. If you use a cross-dissolve on 90% of your cuts, this shortcut is worth memorising immediately.
04The Precision Editor
Double-click any transition to open the Precision Editor, a dedicated view that shows the outgoing and incoming clips on separate rows with their handles visible. You can drag each clip's in and out points independently to find the exact frames the transition uses. It's the best way to fix a transition that looks slightly off without guessing.
05Nudge transitions with period and comma
Select a transition, then press period (.) to nudge it one frame later or comma (,) to nudge one frame earlier. Hold Shift for ten-frame nudges. This is faster than dragging by hand when you need micro-adjustments to a transition's timing.
06Swap a transition by double-clicking
To change which transition is applied at a cut point, simply double-click a transition from the Transitions browser while the cut is selected. FCP replaces the existing transition with the new one. No need to delete and re-apply. Your duration setting is preserved.
